Local Anesthesia

Pediatric dentists often administer local anesthesia “numbing” so a child’s dental treatment can be completed comfortably and safely.

The medicine will keep your child numb for approximately 2 to 4 hours after they leave our office. Occasionally, a child can remain numb for over 6 hours.  This length of time may vary greatly from child to child, and also depends on the local anesthetic used.

Please follow these instructions so your child continues to be safe and comfortable:

  • Children are extremely curious!  Closely watch your child after the dental procedure to make sure they do not chew, suck, or bite on their lip or tongue.
  • Reassure your child that this feeling will go away.

If an injury occurs:

  • It takes 24 hours for swelling to fully set in; therefore, the area may look worse the next day.
  • Keep the area clean with warm salt water rinses (1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces warm water) morning and night.
  • Give your child over-the-counter Tylenol or Motrin as needed for pain.
  • If the cheek becomes very swollen, the condition worsens, or if your child gets a fever, please call our office so we may advise you on further care for your child.
